Day 11
Grand Rivers, KY to Henderson, KY
Today was set to be a long day from the get go, over 100 miles, so I was up pretty early.
Up and down and up and down. Same ole theme for the ride in the morning. I stopped in Smithland, KY. I noticed a post office and needed to mail postcards etc so I popped in there where I was met by Jamie and Kim. Sadly, I think their picture is lost on my phone. But…they were the nicest postal workers I have ever met! I needed to mail a package home and they offered to look for boxes and help me package it. I don’t know if postal workers are always like that in that neck of the woods but they certainly are nothing like that where I come from. Sheesh. So NICE!
Check out these cool garbage cans!!

Much of my ride after getting off of hwy 60 was country riding.

I rode through Amish country but had trouble finding Amish people, only seeing them off in the distance but never seeing their buggies up close. I felt a little jipped but hopefully there will be other encounters further down the pike.

Then it was flat riding into Henderson which was a relief. And only 1 dog encounter the whole day, jackpot! The last 10 miles felt like 50 as dusk quickly approached as did darkness. I only rode for the last half hour or so in darkness and 106 miles later I was at some motel whose parking lot was full of construction trucks. This had me a bit worried, worried it would be a rowdy crowd but it turns out, on a weeknight, they all go to bed super early because they are up with the sunshine. Bonus for me!
I was so tired riding from the front office to my room that I totally forgot to unsnap (yet again, this time no cleat excuse) from my pedals and it was the slowest tip over ever. It happened in slow motion “Noooooooooo….” Smack! I even had a construction worker audience who were very concerned. I would have been laughing if I were them but they were nicer than me and super worried. I got up, dusted myself off and muttered “I’m too tired for this shot…” Funny part about falling because you’re clicked in to the pedals is that people that don’t know bicycles have no idea what the fudge just happened. It’s kind of funny. Anywho, I dusted myself off, assured them I was fine, just planned to go into my room and die of embarrassment and did just that.
I think I rode about 10 miles past my limit and was happy to end this day with a bed.
